How I Got Hired by Brandy Melville at 14

Whenever I discuss my job at Brandy Melville, I always get asked: How did I get hired?

To put it simply, I’m barely even sure myself – but I’ll answer it to the best of my ability.

I was a freshman in high school when I first applied, and as a 14-year-old, it becomes the dream job of many girls to work at Brandy Melville, and it was no different for myself. With no experience prior, I honestly just walked into the store…and kinda asked?

After checking out a skirt I bought that day, I just asked if they had any hiring availability, and the girl working at the counter gave me a QR code to scan, which is how most Brandy locations operate now. It led to a quick questionnaire, which asked basic questions about my availability, experience, and age, but oddly, also for my Instagram handle.

I know that many take that as a red flag, understandably so. I can’t completely confirm or deny whether or not Brandy Melville hires employees based on their appearances, but this fact definitely doesn’t help their case.

About a month later, I got an invitation to do a quick interview, and it ended up being a short 20-minute call over the phone, and I was sent an email saying that I was hired shortly after. I was kind of thrown off by a couple questions, especially by the following: What would you do in the case that a customer begins crying in the middle of the store? Not the most typical questions, and I also got asked about my personal clothing style as well.

It was kind of a lengthy process after to file all my documents, but I began about a week after getting the job. Why they gave me the job – I’ll never really understand. I had no experience before besides doing a bit of tutoring for volunteer hours in middle school, but I guess it ultimately worked out in the end.

For other locations and other coworkers, the case might be different. For two of my friends, they were actually invited to apply when they were checking out as customers, and they ended up securing the job in that way, which I guess also doesn’t help the allegations.

In summary, the hiring process varies person to person and location to location, but that was mine. For any further questions, feel free to contact hervisionary888@gmail.com!
